One of the key aspects of human efficiency is making decisions based on facts, data, and nonideological logic. This is a critical aspect of having an efficient government and political system. In this post, we will look at poverty in the U.S.
As mentioned in the last post, the causes of poverty are sometimes categorized as individual and societal causes. Individuals who live in regions where corruption and poverty are rampant often have little opportunity to get ahead. But no matter where people reside, the individual has control over how they run their lives. To be as successful as possible, they need to be strategic in how they manage their own lives.
The old model for the most efficient way to live life of getting an education, getting a job, getting married, and then having children is becoming less common. In many cases the last step of having children comes first or second. However, statistics indicate that there are problems with doing this.
According to the Brookings Institute, children raised with absent fathers reportedly have lower school achievement, are more likely to become teen parents, and are less likely to graduate from high school and college, among other negatives.
- 63 percent of suicides nationwide,
- 75 percent of children in chemical dependency hospitals, and
- more than half of all youths incarcerated
are from or lived in single-parent households.
Having children is a right but, more importantly, it is a responsibility. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it cost an average of $233,610 (or $284,570 including inflation) in 2015 to raise a child to age 17. Note that this does not include the cost of college.
But the financial responsibility is just one part of it. Being a parent, I know the time and effort it took to take children to soccer practice, swim team practice, baseball practice, etc. In addition to this, parents are responsible for teaching their children morals, manners, and how to live life in an efficient manner.
It takes two people to produce a child. To be efficient those two people should be responsible for raising and providing the financing for that child. The female should not be left to do it alone.
The goal of these posts is to provide the fact-based story behind issues that we are facing in this country. We can no longer allow ideology to make decisions for us when facts and data prove that we should be doing thing differently.
