It’s always said that fear solves nothing, unless you are running away from a wild animal and need the adrenalin. But when it comes to what is happening in our country now, we moderates need to be angry and to put our anger into political action.
We are facing a presidential election where the sitting president has openly questioned the fairness of the voting and whether he will leave office willingly if he loses. On top of that we have foreign governments that are openly interfering with our election via attempts to hack into election servers and through false social media posts. And then we have the Electoral College which has recently caused two presidents who did not get a majority of the votes to be elected .
All of this is truly frightening. We live in a democracy which has served us very well for over 240 years but which is now being threatened as never before. And the cause of all of this is that our country is being controlled more and more by extremists who don’t care for democracy and who think that their ideological beliefs are best no matter what the majority of Americans want.
And after we get through with this election, we still have a pandemic to deal with, followed by paying off a massive federal debt and fixing climate change which is out of control, in addition to many other festering problems. All of this rests in the hands of a Congress that has no capability to fix anything.
But luckily there is one solution that will solve all of our problems. But to implement this solution we have to get over a huge paradigm. We need to realize that having just two major political parties is not normal for a country. The U.S. is one of only a few countries in the world to have a two-party political system and it is destroying us.
The next several weeks, even possibly going into January, are going to be a very stressful time for people in the U.S. This election is not just about electing a president but saving our democracy – a democracy that has fought against right-wing extremist fascists and left-wing extremist communists in a number of wars that have cost many U.S. lives.
The approximately 40% of Americans who are moderates, centrists, or Independents, whatever you want to call us, have little to no representation in government. Moderates love democracy because democracy is a moderate form of government (our Founding Fathers were moderates), we hate authoritarianism, we believe in the rule of law and the Constitution, we make decisions based on facts and science-based logic, and we are not religious hypocrites. We ran our country for over two hundred years but we have slowly lost control to those with more extreme ideological beliefs.
Since we don’t have a political party or a presidential candidate, we will need to decide on which of the available candidates to vote for. For moderates and Independents there is only one presidential candidate who meets most of the values that we as moderates, centrists, and Independents have. We need to vote to make sure that Joe Biden is elected president.
But once Biden is elected, we need to push for the formation of a third major centrist party to make sure that our democracy is never again threatened and to end the gridlock that is holding us back. Join with others who understand that the problems that we are facing are due to our failing two-party political system. There are several fledgling efforts out there to accomplish this such as the Alliance Party (theallianceparty.com), the Reform Party (reformparty.org), and Represent.Us. Volunteer and support these organizations – nothing will happen without you. Moderates are not as passionate as those with more extreme ideological beliefs but this needs to change for the sake of all Americans.
